| This box was made along with its sister as a commission, from Mai,
who wanted a combination of my Kaleidoscope and Dalbergia jewelry
boxes. I'd long considered a rectangular composition made from the
kaleidoscope panels, and I'm glad she gave me the boost to actually
do it She also requested an extra deep bottom drawer to accommodate
the presentation box of one of her pieces, and so this bottom drawer
will hold a full inch and a half. The top's end grain panel is made
of (from center): Brazilian satinwood, purpleheart, honey locust,
nogal, red oak, blood-wood and wenge, in a beveled frame of wenge
with holly accent. The lift tab and lid-stay are ebony. The frame
and box top portion are both cut at a compound mitre, so there's extra
room at the interior top, and the pattern shows through, as it's solid
wood. The sliding tray has padded ring storage, and the bottom has
removable dividers. Hinged with solid brass Italian cylinder hinges,
the lid is stopped with Brusso lid stays. The compound mitred top section
is solid cherry with Gabon ebony inlay, and the lower case is solid
Gabon ebony legs and stretchers with panels veneered with a thick
veneer cut from the same board as the top section for perfect color
match. This construction allows me to fit the drawers very precisely
for a silky glide, without binding when the weather changes. This
is a very special box! Price, $1700, including shipping.

| Open view shows hardware, sliding tray and dividers. The compound
angles of the frame holding the panel in its frame and the top section
of the box form a dramatic rise which is surprisingly beautiful when
viewed with the jewelry box open. The tray and both drawers feature
a foam padded velvet ring storage to match the overall black velvet
liner.A total of 31 compartments, many large enough for your largest
pieces of jewelry, or even small boxes, accommodates your collection.
The drawers are stopped with spring loaded catches, so they wont fall
out when you reach for that special pin in the back. The ebony drawer
pulls are rounded across both front dimensions, and are also tapered
in thickness as they approach the case, allowing an effortless tug. |

| Detail of top shows the fine graining of the polished endgrain.
The honey locust, the pumpkin colored wood surrounding the purpleheart
"stars" is especially beautiful, and the four pointed matched
grain of the wenge inside of bloodwood is a mysterious contrast to
the overall playfullness of the piece. Mai loves hers! |
