Leopardwood Square Inlay
Banding Jewelry Box, 8.5"x13"x 9", with two
drawers. $950.00, shipped.
This box features inlay banding made from leopardwood, and lacewood,
with wenge and ebony accents. The legs are leopard-wood, and the
case's veneered panels are lacewood. The drawer pull is ebony. This
piece exhibits beauty and precision only possible with veneered
work, and has more in common with the fine cabinetry crafted for
European royalty in previous centuries than the other boxes being
sold by American boxmakers as "fine woodworking," to say
nothing of the garbage imported by the boatload from China. The
top veneer is shop-sawn a full 1/16", as is the inlay banding.
The fit of the drawer and smoothness of it's glide would not be
possible in all solid wood. The dovetailed drawers slides with sensual
precision. Stretchers' tenons are mortised into the legs. These
are, I believe, the finest jewelry boxes being made in the US today,
with interiors featuring storage details that make them as superior
functionally as they are beautiful. See below for photo of the box
open.

Open shot showing necklace and earring provisions. Necklaces
hang from 11 solid brass hooks and are held in place by padded spring closed hinged
upper tab, which puts a slight tension on the chains, preventing sagging and entanglement.
This opens and closes with the flick of a finger. Earrings are hung from slots
in tray, and those best hung from holes from a row in front at bottom, altogether
holding about 22 pairs of earrings.
The drawers are graduated in depth,
with the deeper bottom drawer containing a two slot ring pad on the right. This
drawer is deep enough to house a very large ring. The drawer fronts are dovetailed
into the walnut drawer sides - a beautiful detail when the drawers are opened.
They are precision fitted on wooden glides, and are equipped with spring loaded
stops that prevent accidental removal of the drawer, but allow its removal with
a swift tug. All drawer and box bottom dividers fit into routed slots, so they
won't end up becoming loose annoyances. The drawer pulls are sculpted from ebony,
tapered to the rear for a positive grip, and polished to a sensuous shine. The
box is finished with several coats of handrubbed tung oil and varnish, a finish
that will develop a beautiful patina from years of handling, and can be easily
touched up by the owner if it is accidentally damaged or scuffed.

in front, allowing full access to the divided space beneath without interfering
with the necklace box or solid brass hooks.
